FAQs

Yes. No referral is required to be seen by our orthopedic surgeons, though our primary care providers are happy to provide one if you prefer. Orthopedics is among the specialties offered at our Center for Specialty Medicine in Yuma. Confirm separately whether your insurance plan requires a referral for coverage.

If you are admitted, you will most likely stay overnight and in some cases longer; same-day surgery is also an option for some patients. At Yuma Hospital & Clinics total knee and total hip replacements are performed as inpatient procedures, and our Medicare-certified Swing Bed program is available if you need more recovery time before going home.

Unless you have had a ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair or cartilage restoration, you should be able to return to most physical activities after 6 to 8 weeks — and sometimes much sooner. If your job involves heavy work, it may be longer before you can return.

Most light daily activities return within 3 to 6 weeks. You may be asked to take special precautions when sitting, bending or sleeping, usually for the first 6 weeks. Most patients are able to do most of the “don’ts” after 6 to 8 weeks without any impact on the implant.

You will most likely use a sling and avoid using the arm for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Passive exercise begins in that window, active exercise after 4 to 6 weeks, and strengthening at 8 to 12 weeks. Most patients have functional range of motion and adequate strength by 4 to 6 months, though complete recovery takes several months.

Fracture care includes evaluation and imaging, immobilization in a cast or walking boot when the bone is in acceptable position, surgical fixation with a plate and screws or a rod or nail when it is not, and repeat X-rays to monitor healing typically at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Yuma Hospital & Clinics performs fracture fixation of the ankle, wrist and elbow.

Carpal tunnel surgery is done on an outpatient basis in most cases. Grip and pinch strength usually return by about 2 to 3 months after surgery. Numbness and tingling tend to improve over the first several months, though in severe cases recovery can take 6 to 12 months.

No. Nonsurgical treatment cannot actually reverse a bunion, but it can reduce pain and keep the bunion from getting worse — properly fitting shoes with a wide toe box, protective silicone pads, and over-the-counter or custom shoe inserts. Surgery should only be considered for a bunion that is painful, not for appearance.

A cortisone shot can temporarily relieve pain and swelling, but it does not cure the underlying cause of the inflammation. Doctors often set a practical limit of 3 to 4 cortisone shots per year, because repeated injections carry risks — cortisone has an adverse effect on cartilage cells and can accelerate the progression of arthritis. Yuma Hospital & Clinics offers steroid and trigger point injections.

Medicare covers many medically necessary inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures. What you owe depends on your Part A deductible if you are admitted, your Part B deductible for outpatient care, whether you are an inpatient or an outpatient, and any other insurance you carry such as Medigap, Medicaid or employer coverage. Ask your provider and your plan for an estimate.
